Istrian Delights - 5 days gourmet vacation in Istria, Croatia


Istria is a carefree combination of an active or quiet holiday destination and don't be surprised if it wins you over with its charm.
Should you choose Buje, Buzet, Motovun, Groznjan, you will find privacy and the silence of medieval towns – fortresses and familiarize yourself with the gastronomy and wine making. Motovun is a small town in the interior part of Istria, with a green Istrian landscape and wine roads that also plays host to many film festivals. Buzet is an authentic Istrian town that was settled in ancient history and is known as the town of truffles.
If you come to Istria, you will see for yourself why they refer to Istria as the "Tuscany of Croatia. " The interior part of the region with its characteristic stone architecture and small towns situated on hills create a peaceful and relaxing environment. The interior part of Green Istria will greet you with a rich agrotourism offer and untouched nature.

Transfer to Grožnjan where we are going to explore town of artist: City filled with history and art, known as the city of artist. In 1950's Grožnjan was almost a ghost town when a group of painters, musicians and artists decided to renovate the houses and started to live in the town .Today most of inhabitants are artists and there are almost 200 of them. In the narrow, cobbled alleys you’ll find numerous galleries and art studios with handmade jewelry and items. Beautiful view spreads from the sea on one side to the istrian inland and Mirna river valley on the other side. Grožnjan is surrounded by endless wine yards and winemakers so tasting some local wine would be perfect closure for the day. We will visit traditional Istrian "stancija" and one of the best wine producers – Kabola and enjoy in local istrian flavors with perfect view. Drive back to your hotel. Overnight in Rovinj.

Today we are going to meet with truffler and his dogs. Culinary agree only on one thing – truffle in gastronomy is on top level. Unusual underground hidden bulb, with no plant above ground is very difficult to find. Only, a well trained dog can sniff them. Truffles grow in grey soil, in woody humid area of Motovun/Buzet in the valley Mirna. Exactly that is where we go with a truffler and with his well dressed dogs seeking his majesty –truffle. During our 1 hour walk through the forest truffler will tell us all the secrets and particulars about truffles. After that hour
host (truffler) will prepare light lunch with truffles and local wine. After dlicious lunch we drive to Hum, according to Guiness book of record Hum is the smallest town in the world. On the way back to the hotel we will stop in Buzet to visit the Grappa brewery where you will acquainted with grappa production and have the opportunity to taste different grappas. Overnight in Rovinj.

In the morning we are going to explore town of Poreč. The old city has preserved the structure of old Roman castrum. The main streets, Decumanus and Cardo Maximus,are still preserved in their original forms. Decumanus connected the square Marafor in the western part of old city with city gates at its eastern end. Roman Forum with temples to Roman gods was located on the Marafor square. There is still today a Romanic house and a few beautiful Venetian gothic palaces. The Istrian Assembly Hall, originally a13th century gothic Franciscan church, was remade in baroque style in the 18th century. Porec was surrounded with fortification walls from 12th to 19th century. Three defense towers still exist at the entrance of the old city. The most important cultural monument of Porec is the complex of Euphrasian Basilica dating from the 5th century. The original church was extended in the 6th century under Byzantine Empire and bishop Euphrasius. The interior of the basilica is ornamented with unique mosaics. From 1997 Eufrasius basilica is protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. After exploring Poreč we are going to visit the family homestead from the 14th century, situated in Štancija Kumparička next to Pula, produces high-quality cheeses. Their products are made in complete harmony with nature, respecting and promoting the true taste and smell in gastronomy.
Later we are going to explore Pula, the largest town of Istrian county with lot of great monuments like Arena,(UNESCO) the most important monument in Istria from the Roman antiquity, erected in the 1st Century AD. When strolling around the OldTown, you will view the grandeur of Pula's impressive monuments, such as The Arch of Sergii, Hercules's and the Double Gates. Drive back to your hotel. Overnight in Rovinj.

Yes, just let us know your chosen trip and we can organize a private departure. Prices may vary from those given on the website, depending on the size of the group and date of departure.
What is the accommodation going to be like?
You'll mainly stay in small, locally-run,3 star hotels and guesthouses, which reflect the character of the area.
What is the food like?
Breakfasts are generally buffets that take your active program into consideration with a variety of low-fat and high-nutrition choices. Lunch is included and organized in local taverns and specialized restaurants.  Dinners are included and served in hotels. If you have any allergies, restrictions or strong preferences, please let us know as far in advance as possible.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as Istria is extremely popular over the summer months.
When is the best time of year?
Traditionally April/May/June and September/October have always been the most popular time of year because the weather is better. July and August is better to avoid as it can be too hot for walking and towns and beaches are overcrowded.


When do I get my tour documents?

You receive tour documents, including your hotel list and information on how to get to your starting town and hotel, tour operator contacts, packing tips, and other helpful information, about 2-3 weeks before your tour. You get packets with maps, route instructions, and sightseeing information at your start hotel.

What is the size of the group on a guided tour?

We usually take between four and twelve guests on each guided tour. If we have a larger group, we'll have additional leaders so that we can split up if necessary. With this size of group, we can cater for individual needs and still ensure the whole party is well looked after.

How knowledgeable and experienced is the Group Leader?

The local guides undergo extensive training in all aspects of travel in the region. They are full-time professionals and are selected for their empathy and knowledge of the area you are visiting.

Which is the best airport?

Pula is the best airport to fly into and then you can catch the bus or we can arrange private taxi transfers to Poreč. If you fly into Venice airport you can catch ferry from Venice to Poreč which regulary connecting Venice and Poreč. Ticket must be booked in advance (by us). From Ljubljana/Triest or Zagreb airport we can organise you private transfer.
